Today is Khemchand Prakash ji’s 60th death anniversary. It sixty years since he passed away but his music still lives on..

On December 12, 2007, to commemorate 100th Birth Anniversary of Legendary Music Director of Hindi Film Music, Sh. Khemchand Prakash, Suryatra did a short documentary on life and music of Sh. Khemchand Prakash.

December 12, 2007. What does this date signifies for hindi films.. I did surfed through the news papers, TV channels, web sites and news groups to find out if someone cared to cover an important event in Hindi cinema.. While I could know from them that Sanjay Dutt resumed shooting today after his yet another comeback from Jail, unfortunately could not find a single mention of 100th Birth Anniversary of a musical legend of hindi cinema Khem Chand Prakash. A legend who died at a very young age of 42 but before leaving has given the world a handful of immortal melodies for the generations to come

It was exactly 100 years ago, on December 12, 1907 when Khemchand Prakash was born in Jaipur. His father was a dhrupad singer and a kathak dancer in the royal court and boy Khemchand got his first training of music and dance from his father. In his teens, he joined Bikaner Royal court as a singer performer and later moved to the royal court of Nepal.. but the destiny landed him in Kolkata and he joined New Theaters in Kolkata as an assistant of Timir Baran. He was assistant of Timir Baran in Devdas (1935).

100th Birth Anniversary

An authentic source and a close associate of Shri Khemchand Prakash told me that two of classic compositions from Devdas “dukh ke din ab” and “baalam aan baso” were composed by Guru ji yet his contributions went uncredited. It was Street Singer (1938), when he got chance to face camera in a song due to his kathak skills in a comedy dance song. It was 1939, when he got his first break as an independent music director with the Supreme Pictures “Meri Aankhein”.. The next film was “Gaazi salauddin” and yet another legendary music director Naushad worked as as assistant to Khemchand Prakash in that film.

“Khemchand ji ne Gaaji Salaauddin me pehla mauka diya, ye unki badi meharbani, inayat thi ki unhone mujhe mauka diya, mujhe aisa mauka mila, aise guni aadmi ke saath kaam karne ka”

His initial years had a few more significant films like Pardesi, Holi, Fariyaad and Khursheed was his leading singer and both of them gave a lot of hits of early 40s.

But it was in 1943, came a film that pushed Khemchand Prakash much ahead of other music directors of that era and the film was KL Saigal starrer Tansen. Tansen is considerd as one of the finest musical films for its music. Diya jalaao jagmag jagmag, Rumjhum rumjhum chal tihari, More balpan ke saathi, sapt suran teen gram are musical gems who have not lost shine even after sixty years.

“Jab unhone Tansen film me Saigal ko Dhrupad ang ka gaana “Sapt suran teen gram” diya, to main iske baare me ye bata doon ki Tansen se jab bhi (kisi film/drame me) gaana gawaya gaya hai to khayaal gawaaya gaya hai, magar Tansen ke waqt me khayaal gaayan hota hi nahin tha aur unke samay me Dhrupad hi tha aur ye Khemchand Prakash ji hi the jinhone Dhrupad se introduction karawaaya Tansen ko (filmon me)”

“Jo bhi geet Khemchand ji banate the bada sureelapan hota tha, aur jyadatar ek thumri ka ang hota tha.. layakari bahut achhi thi unke compositions me.. Khemchand ji ke saath jitne bhi din hum rahe bada lutf aaya.. unse bahut kuchh seekha, unke naqshe.qadam pe chalne ki koshish ki.. lekin unke mukaam par nahin pahunch sake.. Tansen me unke raagdaariyo ka jo istemaal tha waisa koi doosra music director nahin kar paaya.. maine bhi koshish ki Baiju Baawara me lekin un tak nahin pahunch paaya.. ”

1948 marked yet another significant film of his career, Bombay Talkies’s Ziddi..

He gave first major break to Kishore Kumar as a singer for the song “Marne ki duaaen kyun maangu”.

It is a very famous fact that Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was initially rejected by the Producer Chandu lal shah and Khemchand Prakash challanged his decision and told him that this voice will one day rule the nation and resigned. Ziddi featured a beautiful song of Lata Mangeshkar “Chanda re ja re ja re”..

But what followed Ziddi was an outstanding an immortal piece of Work in the form of music of Mahal (1949).

Mahal made Lata Mangeshkar a popular name in every corner of the country. Prior to Mahal, the records used to feature the character name as the name of the singer with the song on the record.. so the first lot of records had “Aayega aane wala” credited to Kamini.. but the public demanded for revealing the name of the singer and so from Mahal onwards singers started to get credited on the records.

Mahal’s music is a landmark in Hindi Cinema. The haunting melodies and brilliant orchestration set the foundation for the golden period of hindi film music of 50s..
and have you ever noticed “Ayega aane wala” forms the smallest mukhda of any hindi film song.. With just three words Khemchand ji made a magical composition and also all other songs of Mahal (Ghabara ke jo hum sar ko, mushkil hai bahut mushkil, dil ne phir yaad kiya) are immortal…

Unfortunately Khemchand Prakash could not survive for long to see the success of Mahal and also shaping up of the golden era of hindi film music (of 50s) and passed away on August 10, 1950 at a relatively young age of 42. Mahal, Tansen and Ziddi are just a few samples of what he could be, had he been there for a longer stint..

100 years later :
One of the research scholars Dr. Vidya Arya from Rajasthan visited a school in Orissa and during her visit to the school, she was asked to be the chief guest in one of the quiz function of the school. Out of her curosity she too asked a few questions and one of them was “who was the music director of Ayega aane wala – Mahal” and the more than a dozen of hands were up to tell her it was Khemchand Prakash…
Khemchand Prakash will live on.. His music will live on.. His music is forever..

फ़िल्मों में तीस के दशक में पार्श्वगायकी के दौर के शुरु होने के बाद पार्श्व गायकों ने फ़िल्म और संगीत रसिकों से एक अनूठा रिश्ता कायम किया।

“आवाज़ का रिश्ता!”

भारतीय फ़िल्मों के स्वर्णिम दौर में कई महान गायकों ने अपनी आवाज़ के जादू से, रुपहले पर्दे पे आए बिना, सुनने वालों के दिल में एक अमिट स्थान बना लिया…

उनकी आवाज़ उनके व्यक्तित्व की अमिट पहचान बन गयी।

इनमें से कई गायक परदे पर अभिनेता के रूप में कई बार अवतरित भी हुए। कुछ मुख्य तो कुछ चरित्र भूमिकाओं में… जब भी इन गायकों पर परदे पर गीत फ़िल्माए गए तो ये नामुमकिन सा था कि अपने खुद के किरदार के लिये किसी और का पार्श्व गायन हो…

मगर इस मायानगरी की माया अनूठी है, अन्दाज़ निराले हैं!
ऐसे भी मौके आये, जब इन महान गायकों को (खासकर किशोर कुमार) को अन्य गायकों की आवाज़ उधार लेनी पड़ी…

जब इनकी आवाज़ परदे पर इनकी पहचान ना रही….

आइये, देखें ऐसे ही कुछ लम्हे, कुछ गीत, उधार की आवाज़ के साथ!

साथ ही प्रस्तुत हैं, कुछ ऐसे भी गीत जब ये गायक, अभिनेता ना होने के बावज़ूद पर्दे पर गीतों पे अवतरित हुए, और आवाज़ के रिश्ते के साथ साथ पर्दे पर भी एक रिश्ता कायम किया!

कुछ सुबहें बहुत काली होती हैं.. रात के घनघोरतम अंधेरे से भी काली! ऐसी ही एक सुबह से आज सुबह मुलाकात हुई जब अलस भोर में टेलीफोन पे मिले एक समाचार से अंधेरा सा छा गया.. दिनेश चन्द्र शर्मा जी नहीं रहे!

बहुत से लोगों के लिये ये नाम अनजाना सा प्रतीत हो सकता है, मगर सुरयात्रा और उसके प्रारम्भिक दौर में जुड़े सुरयात्रियों के लिये बहुत अपनापन लिए हुए है! सुरयात्रा के साथ उनका रिश्ता सुरयात्रा के जन्म के साथ ही बन गया था और 9 दिसम्बर 2001 सुरयात्रा की पहली गोष्ठी में संगीतकार दान सिंह के साथ विशिष्ठ अतिथि के रूप में शामिल हो कर सुरयात्रा के जन्म के साक्षी बने। सौम्य, शांत और मिलनसार प्रकृति के दिनेश जी अपने अंदर फ़िल्मों के लिए दीवानगी और जानकारियों का एक समुद्र समाये हुए थे। उनकी गज़ब की याद्दाश्त उनके व्यक्तित्व का एक खास हिस्सा थी।

दिनेश जी का जन्म 12 जनवरी 1936 को महाराष्ट्र के धूलिया गाँव मे हुआ था और अन्त तक वे वहीं के होके रहे। बचपन से ही फ़िल्मों का एक जूनून सा था उनमें. उस दौर के कलाकार मारुतिराव पहलवान उन्हीं के गाँव के थे और पूरे गाँव में पूजे जाते थे। मारुतिराव के इनके परिवार से घनिष्ठ संबंध थे और अकसर भोजन पे फ़िल्मों का जिक्र होता रहता था। ऐसे माहौल में उनका सिनेमा का शौक परवान चढ़ा। सिनेमा से उनका रिश्ता ऐसा जुड़ा कि फ़िल्म देखते हुए उसके हर-एक पहलू पे पैनी नज़र जिसमें कि खासकर गीत फ़िल्मांकन, नृत्य कलाकार और चरित्र अभिनेता की छाप हमेशा के लिए दिल में घर कर गई हो जैसे। जब भी जयपुर आते थे या मिलना होता था, उनके साथ बातें करते घंटों बीत जाते थे और समय का पता ही नहीं चलता था। जहां भी जाते थे अपने साथ यादों का एक पूरा काफ़िला लेकर साथ चलते थे। बचपन में 4 महीने की उम्र में ही पिता को खो चुके दिनेश जी ने पूरी उम्र अभावों मे गुजारी मगर अभावों को अपने शौक, अपनी दीवानगी के आड़े नहीं आने दिया। घर के पास में जाकर चाय की थड़ी पर घंटो गुजारना ताकि रेडियो पर बज रहे ज्यादा से ज्यादा गाने सुन सकें और अखबारों से ज्यादा से ज्यादा जानकारी पढ़ सकें। वहीं से पुराने अखबार इकठ्ठे करके लाना और अपने संग्रह में जमा करना।

हिन्दी फ़िल्मों पे लिखी कई पुस्तकों में उनके योगदान का जिक्र है, मगर उनसे कहीं ज्यादा संख्या उन योगदानों की है जिसका जिक्र नहीं हुआ। मुम्बई के अजीत प्रधान और प्रीतम मेंघानी जब रफ़ी साब पर किताब लिख रहे थे तो दिनेश जी ने ही फ़िल्मांकन की जानकारी देने का प्रस्ताव रखा और उस किताब को एक अनूठा योगदान दिया। इसी तरह कमल धीमान और राज कुमार राणा, जब किशोर कुमार पर अपनी किताब लिख रहे थे तो उसमें लगभग हर गीत के फ़िल्मांकन की जानकारी दिनेश जी की यादों से निकली थी। वरना 50 साल बाद किसको पता था कि 1952 की फ़िल्म रंगीली में किशोर कुमार का दोहरी आवाजों में गाया ’बैयां छोड़ बलम घर जाना” याकूब और मुमताज अली (महमूद के पिता) पर फ़िल्माया गया था। इसी तरह की हज़ारों जानकारियां उन दोनो किताबों को फ़िल्म संगीत के ’डॉक्युमेंटेशन’ में एक अलग स्तर पे ले जाती हैं।

हरीश रघुवंशी जब ’जी’ मैग्ज़ीन के लिये स्कोर बोर्ड में अनूठी जानकारियां देते तो तो कई बार दिनेश जी का योगदान रहता था। गीतकोष में दी गईं कुछ जानकारियों में भी उनका योगदान रहा जैसे राज कपूर की 1953 में फ़िल्म लहरें में मेहमान कलाकार के रूप में की गई भूमिका। कई बार उनको किसी कलाकार का नाम नहीं मिलता था तो ढूंढने के लिये बैचेन हो जाते.. नहीं मिलता तो अपनी ओर से एक कोड नेम दे देते.. जैसे एक जूनियर कलाकार जो बहुत सी फ़िल्मॊ के गीतों में तबलची का रोल करते हुए दिखा, उसका किसी से नाम नहीं मिल पाया तो उन्होंने उसका नाम ’तबलची’ रख दिया, क्यूंकि उस कलाकार का नाम नहीं पता था मगर किस किस गीत में उसे देखा है ये याद था उन्हें । बरसों बाद उन्हें वीर दुर्गादास के निर्माता एस. जी. लाड से पता चला कि उस ’तबलची’ कलाकार का असली नाम दीनानाथ है और प. भरत व्यास का बहुत करीबी जानकार है और उसको कई फ़िल्मों में प. भरत व्यास ने ही काम दिलवाया था। ये जानकारी मिलने के बाद उनके तबलची को नाम मिल गया और उनके चेहरे की खुशी देखने लायक थी। इसी तरह से फ़िल्म एक ही रास्ता के ’चली गोरी पी से मिलन को चली’ में प. लच्छू महाराज, या फ़िर ’अनारकली’ के ’जाग दर्दे-इश्क जाग’ को पर्दे पे साकार करने वाले ’इब्राहिम’ के लिये उन्होने बरसों तलाश की और ढूंढ के ही निकाला।

संगीत में संगीतकार रोशन उनके सबसे पसंदीदा संगीतकार रहे, मुझे याद है उनके पास रोशन के सभी गीत थे, उनकी पहली फ़िल्म ’नेकी और बदी’ के कुछ गीत छोड़ कर. उस समय जब केदार शर्मा की स्मृति में निकला ’वन एंड लोनली केदार शर्मा’ का पैक उन्हें दिया जिसमें नेकी और बदी के भी कुछ गीत थे तो उनके चेहरे की रौनक देखते ही बनती थी। उनका अंग्रेजी का ज्ञान बहुत सीमित था फिर भी हॉलीवुड की फ़िल्में बहुत शौक से देखते थे और 40 और 50 के दशक की हॉलीवुड की फ़िल्मों और कलाकारों की जबरदस्त जानकारी थी उन्हें। अभी हाल में उन्होने एक अनूठी जानकारी दी कि फ़िल्म बूट पॉलिश में ’चली कौन से देस गुजरिया’ के फ़िल्मांकन में गीतकार शैलेन्द्र और बेबी नाज़ के अलावा जो एक बाल नृत्यांगना है वो खेमचन्द प्रकाश जी की बेटी चन्द्रकला है । इसकी खबर स्व. चन्द्रकला जी के पति, प्रख्यात नाट्य निर्देशक राम गोपाल बजाज और बेटे रिजु बजाज के पास पहुंची तो उन्हें भी काफ़ी आश्चर्य हुआ।

मुझसे उम्र में दोगुने बड़े थे मगर दोस्तों की तरह ही मिलते थे! मुझे याद है इक बार कार में मेरे साथ जाते हुए कैसेट पे जैसे ही सलिल दा की अमानत का हेमंत-गीता का गाया गीत ’हो जबसे मिले तोसे अंखियां’ अचानक से बजा, उनकी आंखों में चमक सी आई और सीट से वे लगभग उछल ही पड़े.. बोले बहुत दिनों बाद सुना है ये गीत, जो कि मेरे सबसे पसंदीदा गीतों में है फिर उसके मूल स्त्रोत के बारे में बात करने लगे। कई महीनों बाद मेरे जन्मदिन के दिन सुबह मोबाईल की घन्टी बजी और ’हैलो’ की बजाय वो गीत सुनाई दिया.. फिर आवाज आई कि बताइये आज आपको किसने याद किया है! अब बताईये ऐसे इंसान को कौन भूल सकता है। उनका जाना मेरे और समस्त सुर यात्रियों के लिये तो एक व्यक्तिगत क्षति है ही, हिन्दी फ़िल्मों और संगीत के समस्त चाहने वालों के लिए भी एक बहुत बड़ा नुकसान है। अपने अन्दर जानकारियों का अमृत समेटे हुए ये समुद्र आज सुबह एक बूंद बन कर हमेशा के लिए उड़ गया! जाते जाते वही बूंद आंखों मे दे गया! हमेशा के लिए!
